OS X External Drives Disconnect

Technical Skill: Easy

The Issue When I upgraded to High Sierra, I began to have problems with my USB 3 external drives constantly disconnecting. The Energy Saver settings had no effect.

The Fix After much research and little result, I found something on the App store that seems to have fixed it. It’s called Antisleep by 3bitlabs. In order to keep external disks from sleeping, you will need the Pro license to activate that feature but the cost is minimal. I’m sure there is some way to accomplish this from the command line for free, but I can’t find it and this is easier.

There is also a terminal command called Caffeinate which may help. You can determine it’s usage with the Caffeinate -help command. I just found the Antisleep app to be easier, more features, and effective.
